He exploites Roderigo as a source of money and an unwitting accomplice in his plot to bring down Othello. He had hoped for promotion, but Othello passed over him in favor of Cassio, and Iago works revenge on them both. Iago Othello's ancient (captain) in the Venetian defense forces. Inflamed with jealousy, he smothers Desdemona in her bed, only to find out too late that he has been misled and has killed the woman who loved him faithfully. Iago works on Othello's personal and social insecurity until Othello believes the combination of Iago's lies and flimsy circumstantial evidence. Othello falls in love and marries Desdemona, but during the campaign against the Turks, Othello is tricked by Iago into believing that his wife has been unfaithful with his lieutenant, Cassio. He is a military man, with a reputation for courage in battle and good judgment in military matters. His successful profession brings him high status in Venice, but his foreign origins and color separate him from those with whom he lives and works. A little later in the play Iago tells his wife, Emilia to steal Desdemona's handkerchief that Othello had given her, so that is exactly what she does. When the boats are arriving in Cyprus, Iago notices that they are holding hands as they are speaking with each other. Almost right away he notices that Cassio and Desdemona (Othello's wife) are very good friends. Even though this incident happens in the very beginning of the play, it is the motivator for Iago to destroy the lives of Michael Cassio and Othello.īeing that Iago is so intelligent and he know that he has the trust and respect from Othello, being that Othello calls him by the name of "honest Iago," Iago goes right to work in deceiving everyone around him. While Iago remains only as ensign to Othello, Michael Cassio was promoted to lieutenant even though he was ranked under Iago to start with. In the beginning of the play Iago is extremely jealous and seeking revenge on Michael Cassio and Othello, because of a promotion Iago thought he deserved but didn't get. It is also said that Iago is perhaps the best villain that a character has ever been. In fact, Iago is so manipulative throughout the entire play that it benefits him, but also causes his wife Emilia, Othello, Desdemona, and Roderigo to die.
Iago is one of the more interesting characters in Shakespeare's' play "Othello." Iago can be described as an evil, jealous, manipulative and a revenge seeking character.
